Get Ahead of 2025: Job Search Tips to Start Now
Jan 03, 2025I can’t believe 2025 is right around the corner. It’s wild how fast the year has flown by. But here’s the thing—this moment, right now, is the perfect time to get ahead.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, unsure, or just plain tired of the job search grind, let’s fix that before January.
Here’s the truth: most people wait until New Year’s to start their job search. They make vague resolutions like, “This is the year I’ll find a new job,” but they don’t lay the groundwork.
And that’s why, by February, they’re overwhelmed and stuck.
But you? You’re smarter than that. You know the best time to prepare is before the wave of New Year job seekers.
Think of December as your time to set the stage. When January rolls around, you’ll be ready to execute, not scramble.
1. Clarify what you want
Take 10 minutes to reflect on these questions:
- What are my top three priorities for my next job? (Salary, flexibility, growth, etc.)
- What kind of work environment energizes me?
- What skills or strengths do I want to use daily?
Write your answers down. Use them as your North Star to filter opportunities.
2. Polish your tools
- Update your resume: Highlight specific results. Use metrics wherever possible. Example: “Increased email campaign ROI by 40% through segmentation strategy.”
- Optimize your LinkedIn: Make sure your headline includes the type of roles you want. Refresh your summary to focus on achievements and career goals.
- Create a list of your top 5 career wins to weave into interviews and applications.
3. Research your target roles
Pick 5-10 job postings for roles that excite you. Copy the descriptions into a document. Then:
- Highlight key skills, tools, and certifications mentioned.
- Note any recurring phrases or themes.
- Use this as a cheat sheet for tailoring your resume, LinkedIn, and interview answers.
4. Build your network
Reconnect with people who might be helpful in your search. Try something like this:
"Hi [Name], happy holidays! It’s been a long time since we talked. How is [insert something personal about them or their work]? If you’re up for catching up, I’d love to reconnect soon. Let me know when it works for you!"
5. Create a game plan
- Block off two hours each week for job search activities.
- Set a weekly goal: e.g., “I’ll apply to 5 jobs and send 3 networking messages.”
- Use a tracker to stay organized. Include columns for: company, role, date applied, and status.
Starting now means less stress and more success in January.
Even small steps, like updating your resume or sending one message, can make a huge difference. By preparing in December, you’ll be ahead of 90% of job seekers.
Your future self will thank you when you’re accepting offers in 2024. You’ve got this!
