How to Research a Company Before Your Interview

Dec 27, 2024

I’m excited to share some effective ways to research a company before your interview. With these insights, you'll be able to step in with confidence and leave a memorable impression!

By diving into the job description and learning about the team members and company culture, you can showcase how you're the right fit for their team.

When we're busy telling our own stories, it's easy to forget how powerful it can be to understand the company's side too. The reality is, employers are only interested in seeing what you understand about them.

The more familiar you are with their business, the better you can match your strengths to their needs—and that's what really distinguishes exceptional candidates.

Here’s how:

1. Analyze the Job Description:

  • Try to read between the lines to figure out why this role is open.
  • What problems do they need solved?
  • Are there any hints about new initiatives or projects?
  • By keeping these in mind, you can tailor your answers to address their actual needs.

2. Stay Updated on Company News:

  • Look at recent press releases, announcements, or news articles about the company.
  • Understanding their recent efforts, like expansion plans or product launches, can help you link your skills to their current priorities.

3. Research the Interviewers:

  • Take a look at their LinkedIn to learn about who you’ll be meeting.
  • What are their roles, and how long have they been with the company?
  • Knowing a bit about each person demonstrates your interest in the team and helps you tailor your conversation.

4. Understand Salary Ranges:

  • It’s smart to understand the salary range for the position.
  • Websites like Glassdoor or industry-specific sources can offer insights into what's competitive.
  • Having this knowledge can help you assess fit and be ready to discuss compensation when the time is right.

I know it's natural to want to wow an interviewer with your skills, but it's equally important for you to figure out if the company is a good fit for your personal values. By arriving well-informed about their business, you can stand out as a thoughtful and proactive candidate who’s ready to make an impact.

For your next interview, here are a few steps you can take to maximize your chances:

  • Analyze the job description for 3-4 key skills.
  • Prepare a "Tell me about yourself" response highlighting 2 relevant achievements.
